The Greenbrier Companies is a designer, manufacturer and marketer of rail freight cars and equipment. The company is distinguished by its integrated business model that combines freight car manufacturing, wheel service, repair, refurbishment, retrofit, component parts, leasing and fleet management. In 1919, the company was founded as Wire Wheel Sales and Service. After several portfolio expansions, frames for railway wagons were also welded from 1958 and later freight wagons were manufactured. After a change of ownership and several name changes, James Furman bought the company in 1981 and started manufacturing double-decker container wagons. These turned out to be a great success product and were thus instrumental in establishing Greenbier’s market position in rail vehicle construction. In 1994, the company went public.
