The company was founded in 1847 as Telegraphen Bau-Anstalt by Werner von Siemens and Johann Halske in Berlin. In 1879, Werner von Siemens presented the first electric streetcar and built the world’s first electric streetcar in Berlin at his own expense. In 1896, the first subway on the European continent was built in Hungary. Today, Siemens’ rail transportation activities are bundled in the subsidiary Siemens Mobility.
