Hitachi Ltd. Corporation (Hitachi) is a global listed conglomerate. Founded in 1910 as an electrical engineering workshop, the company quickly became the market leader in the manufacture of electric motors and power equipment in Japan. In 1920, the company acquired the Kasado shipyard and began manufacturing electric locomotives. After the end of the Second World War, the company was severely weakened – several factories fell victim to Allied bombing raids. Complete destruction by American occupation forces was averted, but Hitachi’s reconstruction was slow. The company overcame the crisis and was able to go public in 1949.
